The 60 Swarm Projects
Project Description
The 60 Swarm was an impressive undertaking of two projects that took place along State Route 60 (SR-60). These projects passed through both San Bernardino and Riverside Counties: The Pavement Rehabilitation Project and the Three Bridges Replacement Project. SR-60 is a heavily traveled east-west corridor for commuters and goods movement in Southern California.
Project Details
The $151 million Pavement Rehabilitation Project, which included $144 million in SB-1 funding, re-paved the main line, shoulders and the on and off-ramps for a sixteen mile stretch of SR-60 in both directions. The project passed through five cities beginning in Riverside at the 60/91/215 interchange and crossed through to Euclid Avenue in the Cities of Chino and Ontario. The pedestrian sidewalks at the end of the ramps were upgraded to ADA standards and new metering fixtures were installed at the end of the ramps.
The 60Swarm Pavement Rehabilitation Project improved pedestrian safety, the ride quality for motorists, extended the roadway’s service life and will require less maintenance which will maximize safety and minimalize maintenance worker exposure.
The $21 million Three Bridges Replacement Project, which included $19.7 million in SB-1 funding, repaired deteriorated slabs and replaced three bridges along SR-60 for improved structure safety, pedestrian safety and increased vertical clearance. The bridges included: Pipeline Avenue, Monte Vista Avenue, and Benson Avenue.
Project Need
The 2008 Pavement Condition Survey Inventory (PCSI) indicates the existing pavement exhibits extensive cracking and corner breaks. The increased vertical clearance on the bridges was necessary as the route is part of the National Network for Federal Surface Transportation Assistant Act (STAA) for oversized trucks. Both 60Swarm projects rehabilitated the existing pavement with a roadway structure that will provide an extended service life and require less maintenance expenditures along with improved ride quality.
SR-60, an east-west corridor, is a major commute and goods movement route through a large, urbanized area of Southern California. It also serves the commercial center for Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, including the Ontario International Airport.
The completed projects have improved traffic flow, increased safety and extended the roadway’s service life.
